DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 14 Jun) - Four gunmen killed a police informant in broad daylight attack in the southern Philippine of Compostela Valley, police said on Thursday.
The attack also left the victim’s brother, a policeman, seriously injured. Police said the gunmen opened fire on Dante Cabaylo, 53, who was feeding his ducks just outside the family house in the village of Bangkerohan Norte in Montevista town on Wednesday.
His brother, Juanito Cabaylo, who lives next door tried to aid the victim, but he, too, was shot and wounded by the gunmen. One of the attackers, police said, was probably wounded because the policeman managed to shoot back.
The gunmen escaped on motorbikes, police said.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the province if a known stronghold of the communist rebel group, New People’s Army. Police is still investigating the motive to see whether it was connected to his being a spy or if the NPA was behind the killing.
The rebels are known to attack government spies and civilians working for the police and military. The NPA is the armed wing of the outlawed Communist Party of the Philippines, which as been fighting for the establishment of a Maoist state in the country. (Romy Bwaga)
