Maasin City Ready To Regain Top EVRAA Title

MAASIN CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Mar. 08, 2008) The Maasin City Sports Council is aiming to regain its EVRAA 2005 championship berth during the 5-day Eastern Visayas Regional Athletics Association meet starting March 12 in Catarman town in Northern Samar.

Maasin City Sports Council Training Director Dominador Rojas said they were developing a technique in individual team-building coordination and teamwork, an important aspect in sports of gaining a mileage against their competitors.

Some 290 atheletes, officiating officials, coaches, trainers and kitchen staff will travel to Catarman, about 14-hour drive from here, to have a day of rest, prior to the start of the regional meet.

Elementary and secondary students and athletes belonging to various sports discipline were having their “break” at the Lola Beach Resort in the village of Ibarra after a three-week concentration training at the Tomas Oppus Pilot School in the village of Mantahan.

BAP-accredited referee Carmelo Alejandria revealed that Maasin City Sports Council has received a message from the host Catarman informing them that EVRAA meet as scheduled will be moved to March 23 or 24 up to 28 due to the floorings affecting some areas of Northern Samar caused by continual heavy rains.

The various sports categories the MCSC h as concentrated on the training of the athletes are athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, table and lawn tennis, swimming, volleyball and chess.

On the other hand, Rojas divulged that the City Government has allocated a fund of P2, 028,000.00 for the upcoming sports events. The funds would cover the expenses for athletes’ uniforms, including those of the officiating officials, coaches and trainors; transportation fares, foods, medicines, toiletries and miscellaneous expenses.
Maasin has started participating in the EVRAA meet in 2004, four years after it became a component city. In EVRAA meet 2005, with Maasin as the host, the Maasin delegation has become the overall champion.

In Ormoc City, where the EVRAA meet 2006 was held, Maasin bagged the second place. In 2007 EVRAA meet, held in Baybay, Leyte, Maasin also capped as second place in the overall standings.

The training director also intimated that sports development is one of the pet programs of the incumbent Mayor Maloney Samaco being a sports enthusiast and sportswriter himself. He wants to see it in the near future as one of the successful endeavors he has undertaken in his administration.

Rojas further said that he and Mayor Samaco are also hopeful that by doing their very best in providing proper trainings for the young athletes, they will realize their objective to win. (Quirico M. Gorpido,Jr.)
