RP troops kill 30 rebels in Mindanao offensive

MAGUINDANAO, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 6, 2009) – The Philippine military on Saturday said it killed at least 30 Moro rebels in an offensive in the troubled region of Mindanao.

It said the fighting broke out in Guindulungan town in the strife-torn Muslim autonomous province of Maguindanao where the bodies of Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels had been found.

Another report said at least 5 army soldiers were also wounded in the fighting since Friday. The MILF earlier said soldiers torched houses of Muslim villagers after they found no rebels in the area.

Security forces have been targeting the rebels after the government peace talks with the MILF collapsed in August last year when the two sides failed to sign the Muslim ancestral domain agreement. After the talks collapsed, rebel forces raided several towns and killed and wounded dozens of people in Mindanao.

The MILF is the Philippines largest Muslim rebel group fighting for independence in the restive, but mineral-rich region of Mindanao. (Mindanao Examiner)
