ZAMBOANGA CITY (Zamboanga Journal / 05 Jan) The Arroyo government has earmarked P1 billion for a project to complete the so-called "nautical highway" that will link Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao islands in an effort to reduce transport cost and travel time.

The project links the Western, Central and Eastern Nautical Highways and strengthen the viability of the entire system.

The idea is to speed up transportation services and mobility in seaside towns leading to harbors that form part of the system.

The expanded nautical highway system, which includes the Cebu-Bohol-Camiguin roll-on, roll-off (Ro-Ro) complex, has reduced transportation cost by up to 43% for passengers and as much as 34% for cargo. It also reduced the travel time by up to 12 hours.

The system maximizes the use of Ro-Ro facilities to move passengers and cargo from Mindanao to Luzon and vice versa.

The Western Nautical Highway is the western seaboard trunk route from Manila to Dipolog City in Zamboanga del Norte province in Western Mindanao which connects to the central trunk route at Cebu City in Central Visayas.

The Central Nautical Highway, on the other hand, connects Pilar, Sorsogon to Balingoan in Misamis Oriental province in Northern Mindanao, passing through Central Visayas and connecting to East-West trunk routes at Catangian, Masbate and San Carlos City in Negros Occidental province.
