ZAMBOANGA CITY (Zamboanga Journal / 04 Jan) A lone gunman killed a policeman and wounded a civilian in a daring broad daylight attack Wednesday in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, police said.
Police said the gunman shot PO3 Denmar Padam in the head as his motorcycle slowed down near a school in Talon-Talon village around 1.10 p.m. and was killed instantly.
One passerby Emeterio Aquino was also hit in the body by a strat bullet and his condition is still unknown and hospital staff would not talk to reporters.
"There is an ongoing investigation. We still don't know the motive of the killing, but the gunman shot Padam in the head with a pistol and escaped after the attack," said policeman Jaime Francisco.
He said Padam was on his way to his work in Arena Blanco village when the gunmen attacked him.
Last month, gunmen also killed agent Cenelito Custodo, a member of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, in an attack in Zamboanga's Sta. Catalina village.
Custodio was shot 8 times in the head and body as he stepped out from his house, police said.
Dozens of people had been killed the past years in Zamboanga City where summary executions are rampant. And officials blamed the proliferation of illegal weapons to the series of killings, despite a strict police campaign to collect unlicensed firearms.
Most of the killings were perpetrated by gun-for-hire, who had previously executed prominent people, that included doctors and lawyers, and traders and journalists.
