ZAMBOANGA CITY (Zamboanga Journal / 08 Mar) Two people were killed in a gun duel Wednesday on a village in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, police said.
Police said one of the protagonists was slain when he was shot in the head in the village of Arena Blanco, but a teenager watching television near the area was also killed by a stray bullet. A third teenager was wounded also by a stray bullet, but doctors said he was okay.
It said the fighting was triggered by a long time feud between two Muslim families. Police did not say if it arrested any gunmen, but officials claimed security forces were in the area investigating the killing.
"This is a headache because there are always troubles in the area. We don't mind if the protagonists kill each other as long as no innocent civilians will be hurt," said Chief Inspector Hado Edding.
Police blamed the proliferation of illegal weapons as the main cause of rising criminalities in Zamboanga City.
