Peace Advocates Vow To Support Gov't

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (06 Mar) Key players in northern Mindanao are poised to strengthen government's effort to enhance local peace making and peace-building initiatives on the ground and vowed support to effectively implement the government's National Peace Plan for 2004-2010.
At the Regional Forum on the Comprehensive Peace Process held last week at the Commission on Audit Training Center here, different groups from northern Mindanao region have proposed that indigenous mechanisms in resolving local conflicts and pursuing development in conflict-affected areas must be strengthened to help facilitate the peace process.
During the workshop sessions, the participants voiced out the need for government to sustain peace talks with the rebel groups and intensify information dissemination on the promotion of non-violent conflict resolution.
"Peace process does not only mean peace talks. It covers many paths topeace and it is in peace engagement wherein so much work is being donein order to achieve a holistic and integrated peace program'" said Secy. Jesus Dureza, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process.
To support peacemaking and peacekeeping initiatives under the national peace plan, regional stakeholders urged the government to address land reform issues, conduct a critical review of the existing development framework for conflict-affected communities in Mindanao.
