Tokyo Hospital Donates Medicines To Mindanao

Torao Tokuda, chairman of the Tokushukai Medical Corp., in Japan. Tokuda donates medicines worth more than P3 million for poor families in Mindanao.

COTABATO CITY (Zamboanga Journal / 08 May) A private Japanese hospital donated medicines to Mindanao worth more than P3 million and are expected to benefit hundreds of poor families in conflict-affected areas in the strife-torn region, officials said Monday.

Officials said the medicines donated by the Tokyo-based Tokushukai Medical Corporation (TMC) will be distributed soon in Basilan, Davao Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Sultan Kudarat and Zamboanga del Sur through medical missions that would be carried out by the Bangsamoro Development Agency (BDA), the designated development arm of the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Torao Tokuda, TMC chairman, said providing medicines and free medical services are important to many poor families in Mindanao. Tokuda donated the medicines after Moner Bajunaid, a member of HOPE Mindanao (Health Organizational Development, Peace Education), sought help from the Tokushukai Medical Corporation.

The donation was then facilitated through the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) in behalf of BDA. TMC representatives are expected to arrive in the country to oversee the medical missions.

The first leg of the medical mission will be held in Matanog town in Maguindanao province on Saturday. BDA officials said many doctors and nurses have volunteered to provide free services.
