Cops Clash With Gunmen In Zamboanga City

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Zamboanga Journal / 11 Jul) Police clashed Tuesday unidentified gunmen on a coastal village in the southern Philippine port city of Zamboanga, where security forces are tracking down members of the Abu Sayyaf group, blamed for the series of bombings and killings in the strife-torn region.

Police said one suspect was captured, but his companions escaped at sea after they seized a motorized pump boat and briefly held three passengers hostage on the village of Arena Blanco. The passengers were later thrown at sea and drowned.

"We are still interrogating the prisoner," a police investigator said.

Police said villagers informed authorities about the presence of armed men in the area. The men opened fire on security men in the village, triggering a running gun battle. There were no reports of casualties on both sides.

Other reports said the men were notorious drug dealers in Zamboanga City.
Security forces were tracking down Abu Sayyaf militants in Zamboanga City, which was previously bombed by the group.
