North Cotabato Shines Again



NORTH COTABATO (Carlos Bautista / 20 Jul) After making it to the top 30 of the most progressive provinces in the country, North Cotabato in the southern island of Mindanao won commendations again as it was adjudged as Region 12’s most functional local council for the protection of children for 2005.

In the recently concluded evaluation on the functionality of Provincial Councils for the Protection of Children (PCPC), North Cotabato garnered a 96-point functionality rating based on indicators which included the records of minutes of meetings, approved action plan of LCPC, ordinances providing funds and accomplishment reports.

Sultan Kudarat came second with the rating of 95. South Cotabato was third with 88.99 and Saranggani fourth with its 87-point rating. All three provinces are also in Mindanao.

North Cotabato’s capital city, Kidapawan, also topped the component city category besting Tacurong and Koronadal.


Midsayap, one of its most progressive municipalities ranked 3rd in the municipality category and Linangkob of Kidapawan City won the 2nd place for the barangay (village) category.

The name "Cotabato" is derived from the Maguindanao words kuta wato, meaning "stone front".

The former province of Cotabato was once the largest in the Philippines. In 1966, South Cotabato was branched off as a separate province. On November 22, 1973, a Presidential Decree divided the remaining province into North Cotabato, Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat.
