NPA Denies 10 Rebels Are Killed In Mindanao Clash

DAVAO DEL NORTE (Zamboanga Journal / 20 Jul) The New People’s Army (NPA) on Thursday denied military reports that 10 of its members were killed in clashes with troops in Davao del Norte province.

Darius Sumulong, spokesman of the NPA’s Danilo Villacorta Command, said only one rebel was killed in the fighting. He said many soldiers were slain in the Wednesday fighting in Kapalong town.

The military said 10 rebels and four soldiers were killed in the fighting.

“The 60th Infantry Battalion of the 401st Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is trying very hard to conceal beneath its doctored "casualty count" the truth that again struck and shook them yesterday; that the New People's Army (NPA) can indeed hit them hard with head and body blows even in their own backyard,” Sumulong said in a statement e-mailed to the Zamboanga Journal on Thursday.

He said the fighting erupted after rebel forces raided an army outpost in the town.

“All but two of the enemy personnel in the outpost were killed. One comrade was martyred after the firefight,” he said. “The AFP cannot hide its many weaknesses and vulnerabilities.”
