NPA Praises Bishops For Condemning Political Killings

MANILA (Zamboanga Journal / 11 Jul) Communist rebels on Tuesday praised the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) for condemning the rash of political killings in the Philippines.

The rebels also assured the CBCP that the New People’s Army (NPA) does not target innocent civilians.

Gregorio Rosal, spokesman of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), said: "It is significant that the CBCP has joined the swelling ranks of democratic organizations, human rights advocates and other sectors of the people opposing the fascist extra-judicial killings that are being carried out and intensified by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and its death squads mainly against activists and suspected supporters of the revolutionary movement in line with Gloria Arroyo's declaration of an all-out war" against the revolutionary forces."

Human rights organizations reported that at least 110 activists have been killed since early this year and that more than 700 people had been executed since Arroyo assumed power in 2001.
The influential CBCP on Monday issued a pastoral statement on various political issues, including the impeachment charges against Arroyo.
A group of clergymen on Monday also signed a new impeachment complaint against Arroyo, who was accused by the oppossition of cheating in the May 2004 elections.

Monsignor Ernesto de la Cruz, of the San Miguel Parish Church near the Presidential Palace, led 13 religious leaders in signing the complaint. It was the fifth complaint filed against the Arroyo.
Caloocan City Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez last month filed a similar complaint against Arroyo. Private organizations also filed four impeachment complaints against the President.

Militant groups and other peoples’ organization and political oppositions have demanded that Arroyo resigns, but she insisted that she won the elections and denied all accusations against her.
