MANILA (Zamboanga Journal / 10 Jul) A group of priests on Monday signed a new impeachment complaint against President Gloria Arroyo, accused of cheating in the May 2004 elections.
It was the fifth complaint filed against the embattled Filipino leader. Monsignor Ernesto de la Cruz, of the San Miguel Parish Church near the Presidential Palace, led 13 religious leaders in signing the complaint at the office of House Minority Leader Francis Escudero.
The influential Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines also issued a pastoral statement on various political issues, including the impeachment charges against Arroyo.
Caloocan City Bishop Deogracias IƱiguez last month filed a similar complaint against Arroyo. Private organizations also filed four impeachment complaints against the President.
Militant groups and other peoples’ organization and political oppositions have demanded that Arroyo resigns, but she insisted that she won the elections and denied all accusations against her.
