Mindanao Students Meet For Peace Symposium

MARAWI CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 20 Sept) Some 2,400 students from the Mindanao State University in the cities of Marawi and General Santos gathered for a six-day regional peace symposium in the southern Philippines, officials said.

Officials said the symposium, held across the region from September 11-16, was in line with the ongoing 3rd National Peace Consciousness Month.

More than 2,000 students gathered at the Mindanao State University in General Santos and some 400 students in Marawi City.

In General Santos City, Nabil Tan, deputy presidential peace adviser, briefed the students on the government’s peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

"The road to peace is not paved; there will be challenges along the way butwe cannot afford to give up. The search for long lasting and permanent peace must go on by strengthening our hope. When hope is lost, then peace is difficult to achieve,” he said.

The regional peace symposium series was jointly organized by Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP), Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo), and the ACT for Peace Programme in partnership with the peace centers of ten colleges and universities all over Mindanao to raise the level of their awareness on the peace process.
