ZAMBOANGA CITY (01 Oct) - The Free Legal Assistance for Good Cops (FLAG COPS) Foundation, a non-government organization, has offered its legal services to the members of the local police force who are either facing charges in line with duty or those who cannot afford to pay the services of lawyers in defending themselves.

Zamboanga City Vice Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco, in a news release Sunday, said she met recently with lawyers Noel George P. Puyat and Ed Tamondong, of the Flag Cops, in Manila to discuss about the free legal assistance the gtoup can provide to deserving members of the local police, who are facing charges in connection with their jobs.

The two lawyers contacted the vice mayor after learning about her request for the implementation of a law providing for the legal aid.

However, Climaco said only policemen facing charges that are service related are qualified to avail of the free legal assistance from the foundation.

Climaco said she would speak to the Chief Supt. Jaime Caringal, regional police chief, and Supt. Francisco Cristobal, chief of the local police force, to inform them about the free legal services being offered by the FLAG COPS.

She earlier met with lawyer Jun Esguerra, of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), and both discussed how lawyers can provide free legal assistance to policemen.

“The FLAG cops will hire lawyers and pay for them to defend our good policemen who have been accused of charges committed in line of duty”, Climaco said.
