Muslim Killed In Zamboanga Shooting

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 15 Dec) – Two masked gunmen shot dead a young Muslim man and wounded another in an attack just outside their school in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, police said Friday.

Police said the attack occurred late Thursday in front of the Universidad de Zamboanga in the village of Tetuan. The gunmen escaped on a motorcycle after the shooting, witnesses told police investigators.

“Witnesses claimed they saw two men, their faces covered, and that one of them shot the victims who were just talking in front of the school. The assailants escaped on motorcycle,” said police investigator Romeo Katimbang.

He said the victims were shot in the face and body. No group or individual claimed responsibility for the latest attack, but Katimbang said they were investigating the motive of the shooting.

Gunmen had killed dozens of people in separate attacks the past months in Zamboanga but police blamed the proliferation of illegal weapons and family feud in the spate of attacks. But many of the killings were believed carried out by the Abu Sayyaf group.
