PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 16 Jan) – Unidentified gunmen killed a couple in an ambush in Buug town in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, officials said Tuesday.
Officials said Titing Bongoton and his wife were killed instantly when gunmen opened fire on them with automatic rifles in the village of Pamintayan at around 5 p.m. “They were killed in the ambush,” said Army Maj. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer, commander the 1st Infantry Division.
The motive of the attack was unknown, but the man was a known goon in the province and had been used by politicians in the past to harass their opponents, according to military intelligence reports.
It was unknown if the attack was connected to politics.
No group or individual claimed responsibility for the attack. The province is a stronghold of communist insurgents blamed for the killings of criminals and civilians suspected as government spy. (Mindanao Examiner)
