Wanted Bandit Leader Slain In Southern RP

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 04 Jan) – Security forces killed a bandit leader, tagged as behind the slaying of a deputy town mayor in the southern province of Zamboanga del Sur, officials said.

Officials said soldiers clashed with bandits and killed their leader, Kamil Lao and one of his lieutenant, in the coastal town of Labangan late Tuesday.

The soldiers were patrolling the village of Dalapang when they ran into the group of Lao and a firefight ensued, they said.

Police tagged Lao, a former commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, as behind the killings of two provincial deputy mayors and eight other people, including two councilmen in separate attacks in 2005.

Lao’s group was also implicated in several other killings of innocent civilians and fishermen and series of highway robberies and extortion activities in Zamboanga del Sur province.
