CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 09 Feb) – Unidentified gunmen shot dead a peasant leader in an attack in the southern Philippine town of Salay, police and military said.
Police said the gunmen barged into the house of Dalmacio Gandinao on Thursday and shot him in front of his horrified family. The assailants escaped after the attack.
Gandinao was eating dinner with his wife and children when the gunmen broke into their home. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. But followers of the 39-year old leader of the militant group called Bayan Muna blamed soldiers for the murder.
The military said it is also investigating the killing, which coincided with the passage this week of the anti-terror bill in the committees of Congress and Senate. Militant groups said the anti-terror bill would be used by the government to silence political activists.
Police said the man was shot several times in the body. A television news video on Friday showed policemen inspecting what appeared a bullet wound at the back of Gandinao.
More than 200 people, mostly political activists, had died in similar attacks last year and Gandinao was 11th to have been murdered since January. (Mindanao Examiner)
