ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 11 Mar) – The world’s third largest antivirus and software security company, Trend Micro Inc., has earmarked some $30 million in fresh funding to beef up its operations in the Philippines, the firm’s founder said.
Steve Chang said bulk of the funding will be used to upgrade the company's research and development laboratory in the Philippines which serves as headquarters for its anti-virus research and customer support operations.

The Tokyo-based Trend Micro Inc. was founded in 1988 and eleven years later began its regional service and support center in the Philippines.
At present, Chang said Trend Micro has over 900 Filipino computer antivirus specialists and engineers, which comprise 30% of its labor force.
"The firm's Philippine operation plays a significant role in its global business strategy," he said.
Trend Micro has at least 26 business units worldwide; these include their operation in the United States and other countries in Asia.
Trend Micro also plans to launch at least 10 new antivirus products this year to counter the "evolving online security threats" in the wired world, another official said.
Honorio Pangan, Trend Micro's product knowledge manager, said the company's latest products will focus more on averting the "rising online security threat, rather than curing the viruses alone.
"Pangan said majority of their latest products will protect particularly online monetary transactions."We have seen the emergence of 'malicious' viruses that target business transactions such as in banking, and other online monetary dealings," he said.
"Our latest products will protect the online traders' passwords, and other confidential codes," he said.
Their latest products, Pangan said, also cater to different markets, from home and office use and small and medium business enterprises.
Pangan said the company is expected to launch at least 3 antivirus softwares every quarter this year.
Trend Micro recently released several upgraded type of antivirus; these are latest version of ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange; Layered Messaging Security, the InterScan Messaging Security Suite and InterScan Messaging Security Appliance, and also a new hosted service for enterprise customers, InterScan Messaging Hosted Security.
He said their recently released products basically prevent email attacks, which have also increased in sophistication.
Corporate email can now be endangered by internal and external messaging threats including spam, phishing, viruses, spyware, and other malware as well as bulk email attacks and threats to data security, he said.
