ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / 18 Aug) – A Philippine combat chopper crashed Saturday in the southern island of Basilan, where security forces are fighting Abu Sayyaf militants.
One pilot was killed and troops rescued the second pilot near Ungkaya Pukan town where the aircraft, an MG520, had been providing cover for security forces.
It was unknown whether the chopper was hit with enemy fire or not.
At least 15 soldiers and dozens of Abu Sayyaf gunmen were killed in fierce fighting in the town. As many as 17 soldiers were also wounded in the clashes after security forces assaulted an Abu Sayyaf encampment in the town.
