DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / 11 Aug) – Troops were pursuing Saturday a band of communist insurgents who attacked a government patrol in the southern Philippine province of Compostela Valley, officials said.
Officials said New People’s Army fighters killed a government militia and wounded another in the attack that occurred Friday in the hinterland town of Monkayo.
One soldier and a militia were reported missing after the fighting. It was unknown whether the two had been held hostage or not. Government soldiers were tracking the insurgents in the province.
The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has been fighting for a separate Maoist state in the largely Catholic country. (Mindanao Examiner)
