MANILA, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / 07 Sept) – Philippine authorities arrested three suspected Abu Sayyaf militants implicated in the kidnapping of three U.S. citizens in Palawan island, officials said.
Officials said the three men were nabbed in Puerto Princesa City near where California man Guillermo Sobero and Kansas missionary couple Martin and Gracia Burnham along with several Filipinos had been kidnapped in 2001.
Guillermo Sobero was beheaded by the Abu Sayyaf several weeks after the kidnapping, while Martin Burnham had been shot and killed and his wife wounded during a military rescue operation in 2002 in Zamboanga del Norte province in western Mindanao.
Philippine military chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon said one of those arrested, Abu Moguera, has links with Indonesian Jemaah Islamiya bomber Dulmatin, tagged by Jakarta as behind the deadly Bali resort attack in 2002.
Officials did not give details about the three men or what were they doing in Palawan at the time of their arrest. Dulmatin, who fled to the Philippines in 2003, is believed hiding in Jolo island. (Mindanao Examiner)
