ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 15, 2007) – A Filipino Muslim from the southern port city of Zamboanga had died from stroke in Saudi Arabia while on his way to the annual pilgrimage in Mecca.
Philippine Hajj Attaché Solaiman Mutya said Jelad Padjing Dasid died before reaching the Al-Noor Hospital in Mecca. A stroke is the sudden death of brain cells in a localized area due to inadequate blood flow.
The Arab News newspaper on Saturday reported that the 64-year old Dasid, a retired police officer from Zamboanga City, was declared dead on arrival at 10 a.m. Thursday.
It also quoted Mutya as saying that Dasid, who was accompanied by one of her daughters, was buried immediately in Mecca.
Dasid was among 5,200 pilgrims from Philippines expected to join an estimated 2 million Muslims performing the weeklong Hajj beginning Monday.
Another Filipino woman pilgrim, Saguira Manibpel, also was reportedly held by Saudi immigration in Jeddah due to problems with her travel papers. She was stopped at the airport on Tuesday.
