Photo: Basilan Mosque

A fisherman paddles past a mosque in Isabela City in the southern Filipino island of Basilan. The island's early settlers were the Orang Dampuans originating from the islands of Eastern Indonesia, said to be the ancestors of the Yakan (tribe). The Yakans, inhabited the Sulu Archipelago before the Muslims from Sumatra and Borneo gained control of the area in the 14th century. (Mindanao Examiner Photo Service)
