Commies Kill Village Official In Southern Philippines

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / July 17, 2008) – Suspected communist rebels killed a village official in an attack Thursday in the southern Philippines, police said.

Police said the rebels shot Rogelio Lavandero after storming his house in the village of Libanon in Compostela Valley’s Montevista town. The rebels were clad in military uniform when they entered the village at around 7.30 a.m. and searched for Lavandero.

Lavandero played an active role in the government’s anti-insurgency campaign and had provided intelligence information to the military and police about the New People’s Army rebels.

The NPA, which broke off peace talks with Manila in 2004, is fighting for a separate Maoist state in the Philippines. (Romy Bwaga)
