NPA Kills Cop In Southern Philippines

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / July 8, 2008) – A suspected New People’s Army assassin gunned down a policeman in an attack at a crowded market in the southern Philippine town of Cateel.

Police blamed the rebel group in the killing of Ireneo Poblete who was shot at close range late Monday afternoon.

The policeman was buying food when attacked by a lone gunman, who fled on foot after the shooting. The NPA earlier warned it would target abusive policemen and soldiers and government officials who violate human rights and oppress the poor.

The NPA is the armed wing of the outlawed Communist Party of the Philippines, which is fighting for a separate Maoist state in the country. (Romy Bwaga)
