DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / August 15, 2008) – House Speaker Prospero Nograles and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) XI have handed 61 training certificates to fresh graduates of a three-month welding course in Davao City.

Rep. Nograles’ son and chief-of-staff, lawyer Karlo Nograles, led officials in handing out the certificates to the scholars who were the latest batch of trainees from the Korea-Philippines Technical Vocational Training Center in Tibungco and the TESDA Provincial Training Center in Mintal. The young Nograles was joined by TESDA Provincial Director Armando Aquino.

“This is in line with the Oplan Kaalam Program of Congressman Nograles that offers scholarships even for technical-vocational courses,” the lawyer said.

Rep. Nograles has been supporting different scholarship programs to help poor, but deserving students, who cannot afford to pay the high cost of technical or formal education.

"Many local and overseas employers are looking for skilled workers, especially those who hold TESDA certificates and with these training we are sure the new graduates will soon find a job and become responsible citizen,” Nograles said.

He said because of the huge number of scholars, Rep. Nograles has opened more classes for the next batch of trainees.

“By adding more training sessions we will be able to accommodate even more applicants so that by next graduation we will likely double the number of graduates to about 125,” he said.

The young Nograles said aside from the welding course in TESDA, his father is also sponsoring scholarship grants in college and post-graduate courses under the “Oplan Kaalam Program” which aims to provide access to free education to residents of Davao City. (Romy Bwaga)
