Davao Solon To Retire In 2010, Son To Continue Legacy

House Speaker Prospero Nograles gestures as son, lawyer Karlo Nograles, looks on during a press conference in Davao City.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / September 21, 2008) – House Speaker Prospero Nograles on Sunday announced that he would retire from politics when his term ends in 2010.

Nograles said he will just support his son, lawyer Karlo Nograles, if he decides to run for any political position in the next election. “Sorry to disappoint you guys but I will not seek any more local position after my term ends,” Nograles told reporters, when asked about his political plans in 2010.

Local media have floated a possible clash between Nograles and Rodrigo Duterte, the current mayor of Davao City, who is said to be eyeing the congressional position.

“I will help Karlo win in the elections so he can continue our good programs and projects for our people. Karlo is now ready to take my place,” Nograles said. “Before I end my term as Speaker of the House, I will try my best to implement as many projects as possible for Mindanao.” (Romy Bwaga)
