ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / September 9, 2008) - The Philippine National Police said it will honor a maritime policeman who died while assisting passengers of the ill-fated MV Princess of the Stars that sank in June off Romblon at the height of typhoon Frank that ravaged the country.
SPO1 Jose Manzanilla was one of the Sea Marshall aboard the boat.
Chief Supt. Angelo Sungalo said Manzanilla was last seen distributing life vests to passengers before the ship went down. Manzanilla’s body was recovered several days after the tragedy.
“SPO1 Manzanilla deserves the highest honor that the PNP can give because of his heroism. Instead of saving himself, he chose to save the lives of others and this showed how gallant he was,” Sunglao said. (Erico Rosco)
