Improvised bomb defused in Mindanao

MAGUINDANAO, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Nov. 4, 2008) – Philippine Army bomb experts defused an improvised bomb left on a road where patrolling troops frequently pass, government media reported on Tuesday.

The Philippine Information Agency said the explosive, assembled from an 81mm mortar bomb, was discovered by civilians late Mon day afternoon in the village of Salman in Datu Saudi Ampatuan town in the restive Maguindanao province.

Provincial and town officials did not give any statement, but Col. Marlou Salazar, commander of the Army’s 601st Infantry Brigade quickly put the blame on rogue members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the country’s largest Muslim rebel group fighting for self-determination.

Witnesses said they saw two men, both sporting long hair, left the bomb on the road. (Mindanao Examiner)
