COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 13, 2008) – The Department of Science and Technology in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DOST-ARMM) in partnership with the Science Education Institute (SEI) handed over Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment to 20 elementary schools in the provinces of Maguindanao and Shariff Kabunsuan.
The equipment, which included a laptop, LCD projector and a tripod screen, is intended for instructing science and mathematics in a more comprehensive and interesting manner, according to DOST-ARMM Secy. Pendatun Nur.
“We like to be innovative in getting students to do better in the areas of science and math,” Nur said in a statement released Saturday.
He said the supply of ICT equipment is part of implementation of the Mindanao opportunities for vitalized education and upgrading of Science (MOVE UPS) project that will be jointly undertaken by the DOST and the Department of Education.
MOVE UPS is a capacity-building project designed to increase the competence and interest of pupils in predominantly Muslim areas in science and mathematics. It would benefit a total of 60 schools. The project also intends to increase the number of qualifiers from recipient schools in the Philippine Science High School system.
Dr Ester Ogena, SEI Director, said they plan to donate another set of equipment by next year that will include a microscope capable of displaying the image it captures on a computer. “We like to motivate our young ones to excel in science and math and possibly even pursue careers in these areas,” she said.
ARMM Governor Datu Zaldy Uy Ampatuan said the project strengthens their campaign to curb poor literacy in the region. “With the help of these modern facilities, we can ensure better education for our children,” he said.
A similar ceremony will also be held in Cagayan de Oro City for recipient schools in Marawi City, Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur provinces, according to the ARMM Bureau of Public Information.
