Action star and Mindanao Peace Champion Robin Padilla (right), UN Country Director Renauld Meyer, and Shariff Kabunsuan Governor Ibrahim Ibay are welcomed by residents and internally displaced persons in the village of Makir in Datu Odin Sinsuat town in the province of Shariff Kabunsuan on Monday, December 1, 2008.

The village of Makir is one of 77 Peace and Development Communities (PDCs) of the ACT for Peace Programme in the Muslim autonomous region. Padilla, who converted to Islam, partners with the ACT for Peace Programme in promoting peace-building and peace advocacy efforts in Mindanao.

And Fatima Makmod, 15, of Damablak village in the town of Talayan, helps in preparing the land for planting. She and other war refugees are now living in Makir and taking part in the Bio-Intensive Gardening (BIG) Program of the GoP-UN Action for Conflict Transformation (ACT) for Peace Programme. BIG is a food security program of ACT for Peace as well as a psychosocial activity for the refugees, numbering to 449 families or 2,245 individuals, while at the evacuation center.
