Cop accidentally shoots wife, kills self in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Mar. 19, 2009) – A police officer shot himself before dawn Thursday after he accidentally killed his wife who tried to stop him from committing suicide in Davao City in the southern Philippines, the couple’s child said.

The girl said his father, Insp. Edwin Mabalot, was so afraid that communist rebels would assassinate him that he tried to commit suicide inside their house.

She said her mother, Melanie Mabalot, was trying to stop her father from committing suicide that they grappled for the gun, but it went off hitting the woman who was instantly killed.

She said her father then shot himself. “My father was so depressed. He did not want to go to work anymore because he was afraid that NPA rebels are going to assassinate him. He wanted to commit suicide but my mother prevented him and they grappled for the gun until it went off and hit my mother. My father shot himself,” the girl told radio network dzRH.

The report said the police officer used his own service pistol in killing himself. It said the girl witnessed the incident.

It was unknown whether the police officer had received death threats from the New People’s Army rebels or why would the NPA kill him. Police said it is still investigating the incident. (Mindanao Examiner)
