Suspect in journalist's murder arrested in the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / May 14, 2009) – Police have arrested a suspect in the murder of a newspaper publisher after four years into hiding in the Philippines.

Nilo Morete was arrested in Mabalacat town in Pampanga province. He was implicated in the murder of Philip Agustin, publisher and editor of Starline Times Recorder, in 2005.

Police are still hunting down his alleged accomplice Manuel Alday. A town mayor was also linked to the killing of the journalist.

The Philippines has been tagged as one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists. Dozens of journalists have been killed since 2001 in the country under President Gloria Arroyo’s watch. (Mindanao Examiner)
