KIDAPAWAN CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / July 2, 2009) – Dozens of grade school teachers battled each other in skills on the chess board in a two-day training held in Kidapawan City in the southern Philippines.

Some 40 teachers from two school districts joined the training spearheaded by the Department of Education. The teachers would then train students in the board game as part of the program which aims to strengthen the development of higher order thinking skills and value among children through chess.

Arnil Sambria, Division Task Force on School Sports, said they have already assigned all the districts and zones for their respective training schedules. “This is just the beginning and we hope to train more teachers who will then train our students in chess. They are our future grandmasters.”

“Chess is a mind game that would enhance the child's ability to plan, visualize and read the opponent's techniques, and today, we are to give training to the respective teacher-coaches who shall teach the pupils to play chess,” Sambria told the Mindanao Examiner.

Lourdes Varias, Schools Division Superintendent, urged the teachers to hone their skills in chess and promote the board game not only to the students, but also to the youth in their communities.

Those who trained the teachers in the board game were champion coaches. The training ended on Thursday. (Nina Rodriguez)
