MANILA, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / July 7, 2009) – Filipino leader Gloria Arroyo is expected to join the 15th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Egypt next week, a government spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
Lorelei Fajardo said Arroyo will join 117 heads of state during the summit on July 15 and 16 in Sharm El Sheikh.
The summit will strengthen regional and global cooperation on various political, economic and social issues affecting developing countries like the Philippines, she said in media briefing.
“For sure, the President will maximize and capitalize on the opportunities during the 15th NAM summit,” Fajardo said.
Egypt is one of the founding countries of NAM which also hosted the second summit in Cairo in 1964.
NAM makes up nearly two-thirds of the members of the United Nations making it an important forum for developing countries to work out a coordinated stance on various political, economic, and social issues on the international agenda.
