Filipino boy killed in grenade blast; 2 others injured

BASILAN, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / October 11, 2009) – A seven-year old boy was killed after a grenade he found exploded Sunday inside their house in the southern Philippine province of Basilan, police said.

Police said the boy’s four-year old brother and his mother were also injured in the explosion on a village in Maluso town. Initial police investigation said the boy found the hand grenade at a coastal area and brought it home and played with the bomb until it exploded.

The blast occurred at around 12.30 p.m. while the boy’s mother was busy preparing meal, police said.

It was unknown who owned the grenade or how the small bomb ended up along the coast, but illegal weapons abound Basilan, a stronghold of Moro rebels and Abu Sayyaf militants blamed for the spate of attacks and terrorism in the province. (Mindanao Examiner)
