ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / January 1, 2009) – Two people were killed and five more injured after a foot bridge collapsed in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, police said Friday.
Police said the accident occurred as dozens of villagers were watching fireworks during the New Year’s Eve celebration in the coastal village of Taluksangay.
More than 50 people were on the bridge when one of its concrete posts suddenly collapsed, plunging the spectators 10 feet into the sea.
The bridge, built in 1992, connects two communities in the largely Muslim enclave.
Those who died from the fall were immediately buried in accordance to Muslim tradition. (Mindanao Examiner)
