ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 13, 2010) – Gunmen released the remaining Filipino construction worker seized in Sulu province in the southern Philippines, officials said Saturday.
Officials said Raja Halud was freed in the town of Maimbung late Friday. “Halud is freed and reunited with his family,” said Army First Lieutenant Steffani Cacho, a regional military spokeswoman.
Cacho did not give details of the victim’s release, but gunmen freed Halud two days after they had released unharmed Jalal Ali. Both men were working for a US-funded road project in the town when gunmen seized them.
Marine Brigadier General Rustico Guerrero, commander of military forces, tagged extortionists as behind the kidnappings. “We have reports that some villagers in the area extorting money from those working on the road project were behind the kidnappings,” he said. (Mindanao Examiner)
