MAGUINDANAO, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / April 13, 2010) – Philippine authorities arrested Tuesday a militiaman implicated in the massacre of at least 57 people in the restive province of Maguindanao last year.

Police said Maot Dumla was arrested in Maguindanao’s Datu Unsay town after civilians secretly tipped off authorities about his presence. It said Dumla resisted arrest after policemen raided his hideout, but he was eventually subdued.

It was unknown if weapons were seized from Dumla, who is said to be a follower of jailed Datu Unsay town mayor Andal Ampatuan Jnr, whom police tagged as the alleged mastermind of the massacre.

At least 32 of those murdered were journalists accompanying the political caravan of Buluan town vice mayor Esmael Mangudadatu, a rival of the Ampatuan clan, whose patriarch Andal Ampatuan Snr and his other sons were also accused of multiple murders in connection to the brutal killings on November 23.
