Zamboanga pop group tours Manila; signs new album with Viva Records

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 5, 2011) – Homegrown pop group Maldita has signed a five-year contract with music label Viva Records Corporation as the five-member band went into a massive promotion for its first album in Zamboanga City.

The 12-track album includes the band’s Chavacano hit song “Porque,” which has been also translated in Tagalog. Local councilor Gerky Valesco, who is strongly promoting the local dialect – Chavacano – and Zamboanga’s unique culture and arts, said pop group’s tour in Manila was a success.

“This is really a good avenue to promote not only our unique dialect, but also our beautiful Zamboanga, the only Latin city in Asia,” Valesco, himself an artist and a music guru, said.

Chavacano is a Spanish-based creole language and has survived for more than 400 years, making it one of the oldest creole languages in the world.

Maldita is composed of Demz Espiñosa (vocalist), Whey Guevara (rhythm guitarist), RB Bandiola (lead guitarist), Jimi Tristan (base guitarist), and Mad Nubhan (drummer). (Mindanao Examiner)
