Search for kidnapped trader continues in Mindanao

COTABATO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / May 15, 2011) – Philippine authorities continued Sunday searching for a Filipino-Chinese trader kidnapped by gunmen in the troubled region of Mindanao.

Officials said gunmen seized Angelina Chew Mantigue who was snatched Saturday in her grocery store in Maguindanao’s North Upi town. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the latest incident, but previous kidnappings had been largely blamed to Moro rebels operating in the restive province.

The Moro Islamic Liberation front which is currently negotiating peace with Manila has joined the search for the victim. Four gunmen who posed as customers kidnapped Mantigue and dragged her to a waiting get-away car.

Mantigue’s family did not say if the kidnappers had contacted them or demanded ransoms for the woman’s safe release. (Mindanao Examiner)
