MANILA, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 23, 2011) - Kraft Foods Philippines has received recognition for exemplary compliance to Halal assurance requirements, executives say.

The Halal Leadership Award was given by the Islamic Da’wah Council of the Philippines (IDCP), a recognized Halal certification authority in the country.

The awarding ceremony was held June 3 during the latter organization’s 30th Founding Anniversary at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Makati City.

For the past 48 years, Kraft Foods Philippines has been making food products which Filipinos have come to love. The Company’s higher purpose is to make today through its portfolio of delicious brands - sustainability initiatives and community involvement.

Inside its walls, Kraft Foods embraces diversity of culture among its employees. Outside, the Company operates with integrity and corporate responsibility.

Kraft Foods Philippines’ wide range of delicious products includes Tang and Kool Aid powdered beverages; Maxwell House coffee; Kraft Eden Cheese, Kraft Cheddar Cheese and Cheez Whiz cheese spread; Oreo, Chips Ahoy! and Tiger cookies; Toblerone and Cadbury chocolates and confectionaries; Miracle Whip all-purpose dressing, Kraft Real Mayonnaise and Sandwich Spread; and Halls, Dentyne and Clorets candies.

Delicious Every Way

“In behalf of Kraft Foods Philippines, I would like to thank the Islamic Da’wah Council of the Philippines for this great honor,” says Sudip Mall, the Company’s General Manager. “Two of our corporate values are to inspire trust, and to be open and inclusive. This Halal Leadership Award shows our commitment to making our products delicious in every way we can, for all our consumers.”

As early as 1999, Kraft Foods Philippines applied and received Halal certifications for its cheese products Eden and Cheez Whiz. These products continue to bear the Halal seal as mark of their continuing compliance to the Halal processing requirements.

In 2010, Tang powdered beverages through Kraft Foods (Thailand) Ltd. was also awarded a Halal certification by the IDCP. Prior to this, Tang was awarded the same certification by the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand. This is the only Islamic organization in that country duly authorized to conduct food certification and accreditation.

Today, the globally-recognized Halal seal from the IDCP can be seen on Tang’s many variants: Orange, Mangga, Pineapple, Grape, Strawberry, Ponkan, Orange-Mango and Pineapple-Orange. All Filipinos can enjoy the delicious fruity taste that makes Tang one of the most loved beverages in the world.

Corporate Responsibility in Action

The IDCP is a registered non-profit, religious, non-government organization and a recognized Halal Certification Authority. It is a member of the World Halal Council, the Regional Islamic Da’wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific and the World Assembly of Muslim Youth.

The IDCP grants the Halal certification to companies which produce Halal products, whose plant facilities are dedicated to making only Halal products or whose manufacturing processes are being developed to comply with Halal requirements.

The Halal Leadership Award was bestowed to Kraft Foods Philippines because of its exemplary compliance to Halal manufacturing practices. To qualify for this award, Kraft Foods’ manufacturing facility in ParaƱaque City underwent an audit of the products which Kraft Foods sells - its processed cheese, mayonnaise and salad dressings are produced in the Philippines.

The IDCP also looked into the Company’s handling of Haram materials, or those materials which are not allowed for consumption under Islamic law. The audit showed that Kraft Foods’ handling of these materials is compliant.

Delicious Today and in the Future

During the ceremony, Kraft Foods Philippines was among other local and foreign companies given the certification. Also included in this list was Kraft Foods (Thailand) Limited. Proof that whether locally or globally, Kraft Foods lives up to its corporate values.

“If there are only two things which refer to Kraft Foods, it’s that delicious is our difference, and our consumers are always top of mind,” reiterates Mall. “This Leadership Award is further inspiration for us to keep making today delicious. Whether it is through Halal compliance, affordable nutrition, or lower-priced products, Kraft Foods will always listen to what our consumers need.”
