MANILA, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / June 15, 2011) - In light of the recent incident involving actor-director Ricky Rivero and a friend he met through Facebook, the National Youth Commission warned the youth to be more responsible and cautious in using social networking sites.

“It is very easy to be friendly and outgoing on Facebook, you lose all inhibitions, hindi ka mahiyain, and you can be a whole new different person online. But you have to be careful of the people you’re befriending; you can’t really tell a person’s character based on his or her profile page,” NYC Chairman Leon Flores III said in a statement sent to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

Rivero, 39, was robbed and stabbed 17 times by Hans Ivan Ruiz, 29, police said.

Flores also reminded the youth to observe proper etiquette on Facebook, “Be mindful of the things you post online. You can’t post pictures that will get you into trouble. Be aware that all photos we put online are also available for viewing by Internet users and could be used illegally by other people," he said. (Mindanao Examiner)
