Zamboanga jail bans smoking

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / July 2, 2011) - The Zamboanga City Reformatory Center said it would ban smoking inside the facility starting next week, officials said on Saturday.

Officials said the ban also prohibits the selling of cigarettes in jail premises.

Jail Inspector Belsie Agustin said starting on July 4, the jail will prohibit the entry and sale of cigarettes inside its premises.

He said any visitor caught sneaking in cigarettes to the inmates will be suspended from visiting and entering the jail for three days.

If caught for the second time, such visitor will be banned for one whole month.

“Inmates caught violating the no smoking order will be brought before the grievance committee and the latter will decide on what sanction to impose, while jail personnel caught violating the no smoking policy may face administrative sanction,” Agustin explained.

Agustin said the no smoking policy aims to protect not only the health of inmates but the people working inside the city jail including the visitors as well. (With a report from Jocelyn Alvarez, Philippine Information Agency)
