Philippine soldier killed, 2 others wounded in Sayyaf clash

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Oct. 5, 2011) – Government soldiers clashed Wednesday with suspected Abu Sayyaf gunmen in the southern Philippine province of Basilan, the military said.

It said the fighting which also left two soldiers wounded, erupted in the town of Al-Barka, a known stronghold of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which is negotiating peace with Manila.

The clash broke out after patrolling troops ran into a group of about 50 gunmen that the military claimed were members of the Abu Sayyaf which has links to al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiya.

There were no reports of Abu Sayyaf casualties, the military said. (Mindanao Examiner)
