Panamanian cargo ship sinks off northern Philippines


MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / Nov. 5, 2011) – A Panamanian cargo ship has sank Saturday off the northern Philippines and rescuers were searching for its crew, reports said.

It said the ship, MV Oceanic Union, sank off the town of Burgos in Ilocos Norte province, but the Coast Guard is yet to say whether any of the 20 crew have been rescued or not.

Authorities have not released the identities of the seamen or their nationalities after their vessel made a distress call at around 1 a.m.

No other details were made available by the Coast Guard or the local police about the search and rescue operations, or what cause the ship to sink. (Mindanao Examiner)
