BASILAN ISLAND (Mindanao Examiner / 10 Nov) - Gunmen shot dead a government militia and wounded his companion in an attack in the southern Philippine island of Basilan, a regional army commander said.
Brig. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, said the attack occurred on Thursday in the busy business district of Tipo-Tipo.
"Authorities are still investigating the attack, but initial military report said this could be related to family or clan feud. We have soldiers in the area helping police track down the assailants," he told the Mindanao Examiner.
No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack, but the town is also a notorious stronghold of Abu Sayyaf militants and rebels who had previously attacked government forces. Other reports said the militiaman was shot while buying provision for his unit.
Ferrer did not say whether the slain militia, a member of the army-backed CAFGU (Civilian Auxiliary Forces Geographical Unit), was armed or not.
Vendetta killings is common in Basilan island and other areas in the southern Philippines and the feud would sometimes last for decades unless both protagonists or their relatives agree to a cease-fire brokered by religious leaders and accept blood money as payment for the bloodshed. Troops Kill Sayyaf Militant In Zamboanga Island
PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 06 Nov) - Government soldiers killed a notorious member of the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group, implicated in a string of kidnappings, in a firefight Monday on the island of Olutangga off the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, a regional military commander said.
Brigadier General Raymundo Ferrer, commander of the First Infantry Division, said the fighting erupted after the militant, Tajajul Ampul, opened fire with automatic rifle, on soldiers who were trying to capture him in the village of Kaliran at around 9 a.m.
"Tajajul Ampul is killed in the firefight. There were no government casualties," he told the Mindanao Examiner.
He said the gunman was involved in the kidnappings of dozens of people on Basilan island, including the Abu Sayyaf raid on a rubber plantation in 2001 in Lamitan town where eleven of the 15 farmers had been beheaded.
"Tajajul was one of the most notorious terrorist the Abu Sayyaf had on its roster. He was included in the military's order of battle and it's the end of the road for man who had no fear of God," Ferrer said.
Last week, two soldiers were attacked and wounded by the Abu Sayyaf in Jolo island, but security forces captured one of two gunmen after a running gun battle.
The soldiers were returning to their base from a humanitarian mission on a remote village on Saturday when they came under fire. Philippine authorities blamed the Abu Sayyaf for the string of bombings and kidnappings in the troubled region. (Mindanao Examiner)

Soldier Kills 2 In Zamboanga City
ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / 23 Oct) - One government soldier and a civilian were killed in an attack that the military said was perpetrated by another soldier on Monday at an apartment building in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines, officials said.
'We still don't know the motive in the twin killings, but slain soldier and the suspect were former Moro rebels integrated into the army," Captain Noel Abello, a regional army spokesman, told the Mindanao Examiner.
He said the attack occurred at around 2.30 a.m. near the village of Sta. Maria. The two victims were sleeping when the soldier barged into the apartment and opened fire, killing the duo instantly.
Army Brigadier General Raymundo Ferrer, commander of the 1st Division, said the slain soldier was a member of the army's engineering brigade. "There is an investigation going on and we are awaiting the official reports about the attack. This could be related to family feud or an old grudge," he said. (Mindanao Examiner)

4 Fishermen Killed In Clash With Pirates In South RP
ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR (Mindanao Examiner / 19 Oct) – Four fishermen were killed by pirates in fierce gun battle at sea on Wednesday off the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, a regional army commander said.
Four pirates were also wounded in the fighting, but escaped even before security forces could arrive, said, Brig. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, said.
“We have reports that four fishermen were killed and four pirates are wounded in the clash. Military forces are tracking down the pirates,” he told the Mindanao Examiner.
The fighting broke out at Malabago bay off the coastal village of Bibilik in Dumalinao town after a group of pirates attacked eight fishermen at around 5 a.m.
Ferrer said the fishermen were also members of the local Bantay-Dagat, a militia organization protecting the local fishermen against pirate attacks.
He said the military is closely coordinating with local village leaders and fishermen in the campaign against piracy. Many fishermen in the area have been arming themselves because of threats of pirate attacks. (Mindanao Examiner)
