An aerial shot of the Basilan island in Western Mindanao. The island, 494 sq mi (1,279 sq km) is in the northernmost and is the largest of the Sulu archipelago, and near Zamboanga City, just across the 10-mi (16-km) wide Basilan Strait.
The island's is rich in natural resources and large part of Basilan is still covered with thick forests, and is famous for its white sand beaches and colonial past. Its major sources of income are sea products, coconut, timber, and rubber.
